It messes up what I do for living and makes driving truck a bit of a challenge, this year I have had to chained up my truck, drive in the rain in the bay area, seen more snow then ever before. So, with that being said winter can go away anytime because I’ve had enough. OK ill stop whining on the Club stuff. If you received your Wheels of Time magazine the story on the Porter show is in it. I’m happy that they put it in, but they did cut some of it out. They said that the history of the Club that was part of it was not for everyone and because of space took it out. I will put the hole story in this newsletter and then you can see the work that was put into it. But it is nice to at least be in the magazine and to get some national exposure about the Porter Show. I’m doing the best I can to keep the list of events up to date. It is helpful if members can get information to me when you can. Don’t forget the Redwood Chapter Logging show is this week March 14th – 16th. The Sutter Show is on April 6th this is all foe a good cause as all moneys go to St Jude Children’s Hospital, it at Sutter High School. What are we doing as a Club well we are working on getting name badges for members I think this will be good for when we are at Shows. Working on an inside space at the Glenn County Fair for our race track. We will need to man this for 4 days so we will need all the help we can get if we do this. Looks like we will be doing the Strawberry festival this year for at least one day Our Facebook page and website are doing good if you have not been to one yet check it out and don’t forget to like our page. The Plymouth Show and then the National Show are coming up quickly. We are going to have a booth at National in Reno so if you can help with that it will be appreciated just let me know. We are sending a copy of the roster. If your name is not on it, it means you have not paid your dues, and this will be the last newsletter that you get. We don’t want that to happen, so please pay your dues!! (The roster was included in the mailed version of the newsletter, it will not be posted on the website. If you did not receive a newsletter in the mail, you are not on it. We would love to have you back please contact us to renew your membership. If you have not previously been a member of our club please contact us about becoming a member.) NEXT MEETING THIS WEEKEND SATURDAY MARCH 16TH @ M&Ms in Red Bluff DINNER @ 5 PM MEETING TO FOLLOW My First Truck Show(Wheels of Time Article as written:) I was invited to attend a truck club meeting… I don’t own a truck but was assured that wasn’t a requirement. Before the meeting was over, I had the Jerry Porter Memorial Show in Orland, California on my calendar for October 20, 2018. I have never been to a truck show. I have been to a car show… it is the same thing right, only with bigger vehicles? Wrong, they are not the same at all. I arrived at the show early, many of the trucks were already there and many more were rolling in. I was assigned the task of helping with registration first and then moved on to raffle ticket sales. I wandered in and out of the trucks. I talked to truck owners, truck enthusiasts and people who came out to the show to see the trucks. The owners are friendly, talkative and proud of their trucks. Unlike at a car show where the cars are fenced off and the “Do Not Touch” signs are prominently displayed, you get to touch the trucks. The owners tell you to climb inside. Everywhere you look there are people climbing in and out of trucks. Children are running around grinning from ear to ear. I have had the pleasure of riding in a few trucks in my lifetime and I have always been fascinated by them, but I don’t have an immense amount experience with them. Who hasn’t seen a truck on the road and wondered what it looks like on the inside. Here I was getting a chance. One truck, in particular, was a bright red Peterbilt, with the biggest sleeper I have ever seen. Before I knew it, I was invited to see the inside and I even got to ride in it. I was taken aback by how close the driver and passenger sit next to each other. I was in awe as I roamed around the “sleeper” section, which is really a motor home. I have always been a person to ask a million questions, that day was no exception. I found the owners, club members and truck enthusiast to be, not just, a wealth of knowledge but also eager to share all that they know. They talked about the trucks with great passion and it was clear to me that they love these trucks. I was inspired to join The American Truck Historical Society and the local Northern California Chapter as well. I am only inspired to help bring the club’s enthusiasm to more people. I saw so many great trucks that day, I learned about the history of trucks, and I met some truly wonderful people. If you have never been to a truck show, you should really go!! There was more to the show than just trucks. There were vendors, selling everything from model cars to cookies. People could buy raffle tickets to win prizes that local businesses have donated. This year, there was a tower at the show from Burning Man. It was six stories tall and open to all at the show to climb to the top of. One of the highlights of the day, was the valve cover car races for the kids. I am told that it is there every year and is always a big hit. There was a trailer full of old hit and miss engines. In the afternoon, there is free homemade ice cream for everyone. The ice cream is made in a 35-gallon ice cream maker built by a club member out of an old tractor. The Northern California Chapter of ATHS was founded in 2004 by Bill Irvin, Jerry Porter and Lynn Samons. The chapter started with nine members and has grown to eighty-five members. We meet on the third Saturday of every month in Red Bluff California. The Jerry Porter Memorial Show was started in 2005 as The Porter Show. The show has always been held at Porter’s Welding in Orland, California. Jerry Porter passed away in 2016 and the Porter family asked that they be allowed to continue to host the show at Porter’s Welding. The Show was renamed in 2017 to The Jerry Porter Memorial Show. This year the show had 152 trucks and served 145 people at dinner. It is estimated that 900-1000 people came to see the show. Money raised by the club is donated to local clubs and charities such as: The Jerry Porter Memorial Scholarship, Shasta County Logging Conference, the Pipeline to Education College Tour and many more. Beside the show, the club also does displays for The Shasta County Logging Conference, The Tehama County Museum, and the Glenn County Fair, as well as, other local events when requested. Members of the club will also be in attendance at the National Show on May 31st through June 2nd, 2019 at The Grand Sierra in Reno, Nevada. You can find the club on Facebook @NCC.ATHS or on their website at www.nccaths.com. 2019 ATHS Northern California Chapter Tentative Event ScheduleSaturday April 6th, 2019 6th Annual Truck Show benefiting St Jude Children's Hospital. Info: Bill Irvin (530)624-0148 Our article made it to the Wheels of Time!! It is a bit shorter than I had hoped, but we are in the magazine non-the-less. I hope everyone received their copy. Hi all, it’s been busy this last month with all kinds of things going on. It never seems to stop. We have been working on new flyers for the Porter Show and we got that done. I will put a copy of the flyer in this newsletter (in black and white). We are going to discuss some changes to this year’s Show to try and fill the afternoon, so be sure and come to the next meeting to voice your opinion. We are looking at a bonfire on Friday night and to do something like hamburgers and hot dogs at a small cost. Then somehow do a pancake breakfast on Saturday, move the dinner to an afternoon BBQ and have an ice-cream social after the raffle, just to change it up. Maybe you have an idea bring it to the next meeting.
We now have a new tri-fold brochure about the Club to help promote the Club to see if we can get new members, something to hand out at all the events we go to. The new Club coffee cups are here in blue and burgundy, I think they are nice. You should all get one or two or three or four or five etc.… I know one Club member got 8 so maybe you need 10 only you know for sure. I have them here at my office so let me know if you NEED some. The cost is $8.00/ea. Also, will have some at the logging show in Anderson and at the next meeting. The next Club event is the Logging Show in Anderson Feb 7th - Feb 9th we will be set up in the covered shed like before. Move in Date is Feb 6th. If you have not been it is well worth the trip to Anderson just to see. Come by our display, buy a coffee cup and get some flyers to hand out. I’m going to put a list of events in this newsletter and I will update it as the months go by so if there is an event that is not on the list please get it to me. The Club now has a web site that you can use to get information from and to us. The web site is www.nccaths.com feel free to go to it and check it out. We have also started a Facebook page @NCC.ATHS please visit our page and like it, if you have something to add please do so as if we keep it fresh and help it stay active. The more active the Facebook page is, the more likely we are to attract new members to our club. If we cannot continue to grow our membership, our club will eventually die. And no one wants that! We have started 2 new Club chair position that will help us to move things forward. We now have Tonya Porter as newsletter editor, she will get the newsletter out on time and make all decisions on what goes in it. Sheila Skemp is now our Publicist and she will oversee promoting the Club. She is doing the Facebook page and web site. As well as keeping up with and designing flyers and thinks like that. She will also give the Club a report at the meetings on what she is working on and some fresh ideas as we move forward. Our Facebook page is currently up to 88 followers! Help us reach 100 by inviting your Facebook friends to like the page. I talked to Tracy Shane Pres. of the Sierra-Nevada Chapter. Tracy said he saw in the last newsletter that we wanted a booth at the National Show and didn’t want to pay the fee to get one. He said we can get one for free if we call National, we can make it happen. So, with a few phone calls and some emails back and forth we now are going to have a booth at the National Show. So, we are going to need people to man the booth if you are going let me know if you would like to do a shift. If you are thinking of going and want a room of taking a truck the form is in your Wheels of Time Magazine. I filled mine out last night I think it was a little confusing so if you need help come to the meeting or call me. The National show is May 31st – June 2nd. They are thinking that there will be over 900 trucks there and lots of other things to see so as I’ve said it before you should go and see this. This could be as close as it gets to the North State for a long time. I have heard folks talk about how it was in Reno back in 2001 and still how exciting it was. So, if you can make a trip to Reno that weekend to see it you will not be sorry. We had a great turn out at the last meeting. It was nice to see so many members there. We hope that we can have even more members at the next meeting. Remember this club is for us, so show up and enjoy our company. We love to hear your input about the club and how we should do things. Due to this overwhelming response the Grand Sierra Resort is out of rooms in our block. We have over 1,000 rooms booked for Friday night! We are working on an overflow hotel and will let you know this week what that will be. We apologize to anyone who has not been able to get a room at GSR but we never thought we would have this type of response. We are looking forward to a great show! Movin’ on! Last year’s ATHS Convention registration expert – and current Membership Specialist, Jourdan Williams, this week announced she is moving on to bigger things and a better opportunity. And we wish her well. Jourdan's last day in the office will be Friday, February 22nd. But being the awesome person she is, she will be back on evenings and weekends to help out our wonderful members until we get someone in to take over. Most readers will already be aware that Cheryl Kober, our Advertising and Marketing Manager, also is no longer with ATHS. We wish them both well in their future endeavors. American Truck Historical Society 10380 N Ambassador Dr. Kansas City, MO 64153 Hi all,
Hope you all had a good Christmas season. Sorry I missed the last meeting as I had made an obligation without looking at the calendar for the Club. Thanks, Milt, for filling in for me. I just received my Wheels of Time magazine and the story about the Porter Show was NOT in it, so I called national and asked. I was told that space was a problem in this issue, so it WILL be in the next one, I’m looking forward to that. Next on our agenda is the Logging Show Feb 7th ,8th, and 9th. Move in will be on Wed the 6th and move out on Saturday after 4pm but must be out by noon on Sunday. We will be at the same place as before but in front they have a vender. Remember that it is covered so weather should not be a problem. I’m hoping to get all of us that can to help and to try to get some new members. The coffee cups are here and guess what so are the fly swatters. If you don’t know about the swatters you need to come to the next meeting. We are still getting ready for the National Show in Reno May 31st – June 2nd. From what I read, a booth will cost $500.00 but I will call next week and see if we can set up a table at one of our trucks. I’m not wanting to pay for a vendor spot. I would think we could just do a table by one of our trucks. I will know for the next meeting. We are also working on things to sell or give away at the show and should have the Porter Show flyers by then. We also talked about a brochure about the Club and I will be working on that in the next few weeks. If you have some input on that let me know. I was thinking (yes I do that sometimes it's hard but you know) I could take the story I wrote about how the club started and the card Norma has with the brief description of the club and maybe the story that will be in the WOT and send it to my designer that did the Porter Show flyers and ask him to do something with it for a start. Then we would have something to hand out at all events. I was also thinking (there I go again trying to work with tools) anyway let’s try to put a big effort to go to the Plymouth Show in Plymouth April 27th. It’s not that far away and is always a good show. I’ve always said that the Plymouth Show starts the show season and the Porter Show ends the show season like bookends. This coming weekend I’m going to the Redwood Chapter’s dinner and meeting will give a report on it at our meeting. Also, the Reno Chapter meetings are on the Sunday before our meeting at noon at the Petro truck stop in Sparks, Nv. They don’t have one in January but I’m going to try to attend them so if you want to go, I’ll be going, and you are welcome to ride with me. But remember that Maurice says that I talk a lot while I am driving so you will be stuck all the way to Reno and back. So, if you dare, I’m going. We are still having our meetings at M&M’s in Red Bluff, if you would like to have one somewhere else let me know we can move around like we did in the past. We are talking about having one at Larry’s place out by Paskenta in the spring. We are also looking at places to go and tour this year like the rust museum. That was a fun place. Or the steam mill that was nice. Let’s think about some of those kinds of places this year. At the next meeting we will talk about getting ready for this coming show year and will try to get a calendar put together. We also need a membership committee to help with that. And some new thoughts on the Porter Show. Thanks See you all at the next meeting NEXT MEETING Jan 19th @ M&M’s IN RED BLUFF DINNER @ 5 PM MEETING TO FOLLOW AT 6PM PS. DON’T FORGET DUES ARE DUE If you don’t send them in, I won’t be able to keep doing this…HMMM "Truck Show" By Charlie Smith Showing our old trucks to the public is an important part of the hobby. The shows help finance our local club, we gain valuable recognition and support in our local area, and the shows are a good means for recruiting new members. If you sit by your truck displayed at the show, you are bound to meet several people you have not met before. After several years of going to the shows, I began to notice that the people coming by could be put into several different categories. See if you recognize any of these. #1 "Possible Recruits"- I enjoy talking to this group. Some are young people who seem to have a real interest in our trucks. Others may be older people who have been working for a living, but now think they have the time to work on an old truck they have previously stashed away. We need these people, so we should always have club information for them at the show. This is an important group, and sometimes they become new members. #2 "Nostalgia Buffs"- I also like this group. They come to the show for nostalgic reasons and hope to see trucks they once had, or to show their children one like they had, and teach them something about it. I especially like to see the grandfather types with the grandkids, and see that faraway look as they remember some good times in an old tuck back then. #3 "Cool Dudes and Dudettes" - These folks can be identified quickly. Many are loud and run around a lot. Many of the dudes make outrageous statements, and everything they address always uses the word "cool". Sometimes they even answer each other with "cool, dude!" The women with them seem to not know why they are there and are always looking at their cell phones. A few members of this group that I saw this year were loud, they ran around the tucks, and then spent the remainder of their time running up and down the tower we had up for the show. After a while, they were all gone again. Cool! #4 "Dollar People"- At most every show you may run into someone from this group. Their first question is "How much is your truck worth?" You don't necessarily respond, but already the second question is, "How much do you have in it?" If you do respond, the next statement may be, "Oh, you could have spent a lot less". If you still haven't engaged with them in more detail, they may end with, "If you are looking for another one, let me know. as I can fix you up for a lot less, and I know where there are lots of these old trucks". Oh, yeah, sure thing. #5 "Kooks" - Every show has some of these. They can be similar to the "Cool Dudes" and run around a lot. Most also talk loudly. They argue about how we are doing something wrong, or why we don't change something to their benefit. Some even pretend to be experts on how things should be done, or expert on a certain make or model of truck that they think they know more about than we do. Fortunately, you can generally tune them out, and if you don't engage with them, they eventually move on. #6 "Haven't Got a Clue" - I have never understood this group. Even after seeing the signs for "Truck Show", they will ask, "Is this a show or something?" Some want to know why they can't park with the trucks, even though they didn't bring one. Others who did bring a truck, even though we have explained how and where to park it, still don't get it, and park in the lane, rather than within the lines. I am certain that our club members at registration could add several more examples of members of this group. #7 "Off Base" - If you have an old truck at the show you have probably met someone from this group. They are generally with someone else and they tell them, "I had a tuck just like this". If they see you are paying attention, then they repeat this for you. Then you may ask, "So you had a truck just like this one", and you give the year and model of your truck. The reply may be, "Well no, mine was a different year, but it was just like this one". You then ask more details based on say, your Chevrolet truck. Their answer then goes something like this, "Well mine was a different year, and a different color, and it was a Ford"! #8 "Folks Who Bring an Old Truck To Our Show"- This is a favorite group, and we like them all, and are happy to have them. Sometimes they even become members of Group #1, or even better, join our club and become welcome club members. |
